The Great Rebellion Comes to Posey County!

Confederates Invade Our Fair Land

November 08, 1862

Our sovereign state and county were the victims of an unprovoked incursion by members of the Fourth Regiment of the Kentucky Calvary of the Confederate States of America under the personal command of Colonel E.G. Hall in the early hours of November 08, 1862.

Our own citizen, Dr. William K. Harris, was kidnapped from his home in West Franklin by a posse of armed rebels and forcibly removed across the Ohio River to Webster County, Kentucky, where he was held for one week.

Our loyal citizens were further preyed upon by these belligerents who claimed to be soldiers but who stole a horse and bridle from Mr. John Stephans, a saddle from Mr. Frederick Hendricks, a shotgun from Mr. Joseph Sweeten and numerous items from Dr. Harris including a vial of morphine.

The names of the captured rebels are:  William Quinn, James Quinn, Paul Manns, Charles Woods, Jonas Soakes, Frank DeChamps, Barnett Clay, John Gobin, George Finley and James Powell. The ruffians were turned over to our Sheriff, Blythe Hayes, by the authorities in Henderson, Kentucky.

Cloaking their nefarious deeds as acts of War, Colonel Hall claimed the insurrectionists were simply replacing their regiment’s doctor who had been taken earlier by our valiant Union soldiers in Kentucky.

However, our own Posey Circuit Court Judge, the Honorable William F. Parrett, Jr., was not deceived by these protestations of military service. And, when these perfidious pilferers appeared in our Courthouse, Judge Parrett did not gladly suffer the hooligans’ call to be treated as prisoners of War.   Judge Parrett dispatched their claims to be acting under lawful orders as so much legerdemain.

Judge Parrett’s decision will be divulged in this space next week.
